Florida International University , located in Miami, was our final stop in Florida. Once again, we negotiated a great display location which brought many students past our exhibit and opened the door to countless conversations. CBR staffer Mark Harrington teaches the brutal facts of abortion to two students visibly shaken by the horror before them. Lunch time typically brought crowds of students to our display. Here, Jewish volunteer Keith Nellis explains the relationship between the Holocaust and abortion. The National Organization for Women had a table set up for two of our days on campus, but failed to stir significant opposition to our presence.
An angry civil rights professor (blue shirt and glasses) yells at Gregg (far right) for using grisly images as part of his presentation. When Gregg pointed out that this professor, no doubt, uses similar images to illustrate his lectures on the mistreatment of African-Americans, the professor stormed away in a rage. Day after day, this FIU student was drawn back to the display where he stood for hours in silent contemplation. CBR Director of Crisis Pregnancy Outreach Lois Cunningham explains pre-natal development to the students before her. Horrific images of genocide disturbed the tranquillity on this otherwise serene campus.
CBR Executive Director Gregg Cunningham (hand raised on left) turns the plaza into an open air classroom. Very few students have ever seen abortion images before. As one FIU coed commented, "It's disgusting; I can't believe anyone would kill a baby like this." True to its name, FIU boasts a large number of international students who will carry these images with them when they return to the countries in which many will become influential leaders. Though some students chose to walk by without looking, most couldn't resist the temptation.
Even if passers by keep their distance, the impact is still enormous. Here, two female students examine the display from afar. Students are shocked to learn that abortion is legal without significant restriction through all nine months of pregnancy. During our week at FIU, we received an unusually high number of positive comments from students. Many thanked us for our courage in coming. The opinions editor of the campus paper demanded that "[we] be shot for bad taste" (comparing abortion to the Holocaust), but thankfully the rest of the FIU community was willing to debate the issue without any threat of violence.
